Why this matters
Peeking is not one mechanical skill. Each technique trades speed, accuracy, exposure, and information, so the choice should come before the movement.
Three decisions to clean up
Peek for information safely
When you only need to confirm presence or draw a shot, minimise committed exposure. Do not turn an information check into a full duel by habit.
Clear close angles in slices
Use cover to reveal one position at a time. A wide swing can be strong against a known angle but poor when several unknown threats remain.
Commit with support
Full swings become safer with a flash, trade partner, or timing advantage. If none exists, ask what makes the high-exposure fight necessary.
Use it in your next session
- Label the purpose before each planned peek.
- Choose information, clear, or commit.
- Review whether the movement matched the label.
Review the pattern
On lost opening duels, check how many angles became visible and what was known beforehand. Technique errors often begin as information errors.
Do not judge the habit by one match result. Look for cleaner decisions across several repeated situations, then make the cue slightly more demanding once it becomes automatic.
