Brimstone is still one of the best agents in Valorant for players who want to understand how rounds are actually won. He does not rely on flashy movement, tricky gimmicks, or difficult lineups to be useful. Instead, he teaches the core controller job better than almost anyone: block vision, help your team take favorable fights, deny space after the spike is planted, and make every execute cleaner. The US Army controller is especially strong for newer players because Sky Smoke is straightforward, fast, and reliable. You open the tactical map, place your smokes, and your team instantly understands the plan.
That simplicity is exactly why Brimstone remains relevant. A lot of ranked teams lose rounds before the shooting even starts because they take fights through too many enemy angles. Good smoke placement fixes that. Brimstone lets you remove key sightlines, isolate anchors, and reduce chaos for your entry players. If most players improved only one thing on controller, it should be smoke fundamentals, and Brimstone is the cleanest agent to learn them on.
He also does more than smoke. Stim Beacon gives nearby allies RapidFire, which can swing pistol rounds, site hits, and close-range trades harder than many players expect. Incendiary is a strong stall tool on defense and one of the best post-plant pieces in the controller class. Orbital Strike can clear planted positions, deny defuses, punish predictable anchors, and win rounds outright when used with timing instead of desperation.
Brimstone's value is highest on maps where three instant smokes matter and where teams benefit from direct, readable executes. Haven is the classic example because all three smokes can matter in a single hit. Fracture and Bind also reward his kit because he can support fast-paced site takes and punish clustered post-plant fights. If you want a controller who is dependable, easy to slot into ranked, and excellent for learning macro, Brimstone is still one of the smartest picks in the game.
The reason Brimstone stays relevant in every rank bracket is that he makes rounds simpler for his team. Newer players often overcomplicate controller play by looking for clever one-way tricks before they can consistently smoke the right sightline. Brimstone teaches the right order. First remove the dangerous vision line. Then help your entry hit the next duel. Then use your remaining utility to close the round. That structure wins far more games than fancy but unreliable utility.
Abilities
Stim Beacon
Stim Beacon creates an area that grants nearby allies RapidFire, increasing their fire rate. It also works on Brimstone himself. This ability is often underestimated because it does not block vision or deal direct damage, but it changes duel speed dramatically. On a fast hit, Stim Beacon helps entry players shred close defenders before they can stabilize. In post-plant, it can make spam through smoke or coordinated peeks much more lethal.
A lot of players either forget the beacon entirely or use it with no timing. The best Stim Beacons are placed right before a committed swing, not after the duel has already started. It is also excellent on eco and pistol rounds because faster firing sidearms and SMGs become much scarier in close fights. This is one of the cleanest low-mechanical ways to add hidden value to a team fight.
Tip: Drop Stim Beacon where your team will actually take the duel, not where they are standing before the execute begins.
Incendiary
Incendiary launches a grenade that creates a damaging fire puddle. It is Brimstone's molotov equivalent and one of the strongest simple delay tools in Valorant. You can use it to stop a rush, clear a tucked player from common corners, deny a spike tap, or force enemies out of a post-plant setup.
The mistake most players make is throwing Incendiary too early. A defender who sees it coming often just waits. A post-plant molly thrown before the defuse starts loses much of its value. Think about what the enemy must do next, then put the fire where that action becomes impossible or expensive. On defense, Incendiary is also useful for buying just enough time for a rotation. Even a few extra seconds can turn a weak site hold into a winnable retake.
Tip: Save Incendiary for the action that matters most: the actual plant denial, the actual defuse tap, or the exact corner your entry cannot safely clear.
Sky Smoke
Sky Smoke is Brimstone's defining utility. He can place up to three map-targeted smokes at once from anywhere on the map. This is why he is so good for beginners. The smokes are immediate, clear, and hard to misuse compared to controllers with more technical placement demands. But simple does not mean shallow. Smoke placement fundamentals separate useful Brimstone players from harmful ones.
A good smoke removes the angle that matters most while preserving your team's ability to clear the next fight. A bad smoke gives defenders cover to play inside, blocks your own entries, or leaves an unaccounted gap. When learning Brimstone, focus on smoking defender vision lines rather than the exact place you want to stand. On attack, that usually means heaven, CT, or long re-peek lines. On defense, it often means delaying a choke or isolating part of a split hit.
This is where most players should start with Brimstone: smoke placement fundamentals. Ask yourself which defender angle is hardest for your team to clear while also fighting the site anchor. Smoke that angle first. Once that becomes instinctive, the rest of the agent becomes much easier.
Tip: Smoke the dangerous sightline, then ask what angle your team fights next. If the smoke does not make that next duel easier, it probably is not placed well.
Orbital Strike
Orbital Strike calls down a laser that damages and slows enemies in a targeted zone for several seconds. It is one of the best round-closing ultimates in the game because its utility is so broad. It can deny a plant, force attackers off the spike, clear a site anchor, punish a known post-plant position, or lock down a defender during a retake.
The best use is often post-plant. A properly timed Orbital Strike forces defenders off the spike and buys enough time for a teammate to swing, spam, or simply let the round expire. On defense, it can also rescue a site that your team momentarily lost by making the planted zone unplayable. You do not need highlight kills for the ultimate to be excellent. If it wins the objective, it did its job.
Tip: Use Orbital Strike with the objective in mind. The strongest ults usually deny the plant or defuse rather than chase random kills.
How to Play Brimstone
Early rounds
Early-round Brimstone should think in terms of structure. Where do your smokes make the first fight fair? If you are attacking, decide whether the team wants a fast hit or a slower default before placing anything. Brimstone does not regenerate smokes, so wasted early utility can leave you empty later. On defense, Sky Smoke is excellent for delaying a rush or obscuring a lane long enough for help to arrive.
Pistol rounds are a good place to lean on Stim Beacon. RapidFire can decide those short-range engagements fast, especially with Frenzies, Ghosts, and Classics in tight spaces. Incendiary is also excellent for delaying a plant or punishing attackers who stack together. The simplicity of his kit makes him very reliable in pistol rounds because you always know what your utility is supposed to achieve.
Mid game
Mid round is where controller discipline matters. If the first idea fails, Brimstone must help the team pivot without panicking. Keep at least one smoke if possible for a re-hit or late rotation. Use Incendiary to block off a defender's path instead of always trying to deal damage. Ranked rounds often collapse because controllers spend everything in the first 20 seconds and then cannot support the actual commit.
If the attack has created space, Stim Beacon becomes more valuable because teammates are now taking the decisive fights. A beacon dropped just before clearing site back corners or scaling through a choke can tilt the duel speed heavily in your favor. Mid round Brimstone is not flashy, but he is decisive. Good players understand that making the next fight easier is better than hoping for an impossible perfect setup.
Late rounds and pistol rounds
Late-round Brimstone is all about objective pressure. In a post-plant, you should already know whether Orbital Strike or Incendiary is your real closer. If you have both, sequence them around the defuse. On defense, one well-timed smoke can break line of sight long enough to buy seconds for a rotation or force attackers into a predictable lane.
Brimstone is also very strong in simple end-round calls. If comms are messy, reduce the round to one plan: smoke the defuse line, molly the tap, swing together on contact. His kit rewards clean, direct teamwork. In pistol rounds especially, a basic smoke plus Stim Beacon hit can be far more effective than a complicated execute that nobody follows correctly.
Best Maps for Brimstone
Brimstone is playable on many maps, but some maps magnify the power of three instant smokes and reliable post-plant utility.
- Haven: Three sites make triple-smoke executes especially powerful.
- Fracture: Fast site hits and split pressure suit his immediate utility well.
- Bind: Strong for direct executes, post-plant Incendiary pressure, and readable smoke value.
- Split: Useful for structured hits and controlling narrow choke points.
Common Mistakes
- Smoking too deep and giving defenders a comfortable pocket to play inside.
- Using all three smokes early with no plan for the mid round.
- Forgetting Stim Beacon on pistol and close-range hit rounds.
- Throwing Orbital Strike for kills instead of objective denial.
Agent Synergies
- Phoenix: Brimstone smokes plus Stim Beacon help Phoenix take space aggressively.
- Raze: Smokes isolate angles so Raze can clear the remaining space with utility.
- Sova: Recon plus Brimstone utility makes executes much easier to structure.
